Selections from Will to Meaning LightWindows I – VI, 2024

Taken from the larger public artwork commissioned by the Rochester Art Center, Selections from Will to Meaning I-VI, celebrate the connection of art and well-being through materiality, and gestural, emotive mark-making. The works are also inspired by philosophical ideas such as Viktor Frankl’s notion that the search for life’s meaning is the central human motivational force. They represent the intense connection between art and health. Here, light becomes a metaphor, a transformative emotive force, as well as a medium. For Labovitz, color, light and scale become interwoven. Labovitz provides a beacon with the intention of evoking emotion in the viewer.

“I conceive of these artworks with light as a medium. They manifest the ideas of health, metaphorically emphasizing brightness as opposed to darkness. The works transform when they are illuminated and the underpainting (the Tyvek® is painted on both sides) becomes observable. These artworks were designed to respond to light. Similar to other works I have created utilizing LED lights this work transforms as day turns into night and illuminates the painting from within. They are inspired by the connection between light, color and well-being.”
