122 Conversations, Japan Installation, 2017
Public works provide a platform to share intimate conversations and experiences in a larger public impactful context. I am committed to making public artworks that are interactive and participatory as well as strikingly beautiful. Using color, mark making, and dialogue, I create site-specific work designed to engage a visceral and emotional place for viewers. Color goes beyond language in my large-scale public works, which transform the space in which it is viewed. For these works, I employ a socially engaged process of dialogue that is a unique and powerful platform for interconnectivity, public participation, and creativity.
During my career I have often worked in the public realm. Most recently I have been commissioned to create two public art mosaics at the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (2021). In 2019, I created two monumental installations at Terminal 1 (2019) and Terminal 2 (2020) at the MSP Airport (Terminal 2 is currently on view). Prior to that, I undertook a six-year international touring exhibition and public art project entitled, 122 Conversations: Person to Person, Art Beyond Borders (2013-2019), which traveled to Iraqi Kurdistan, Sweden, Russia, Japan, Canada and USA. Currently, I am working on a private commission for a site in Berlin, Germany, developing a large outdoor mural project in downtown Minneapolis, and creating a billboard initiative in Minnesapolis and Hong Kong for the I Love You Institute (iloveyouinstitute.com).
For each project, I am cognizant of aesthetics and how the work is integrated and responds to space, place, and people. I create durable, low maintenance and permanent works. As part of that process I provide a detailed maintenance plan and schedule for the installation process. All materials are acceptable for public spaces as well as ADA compliant. I have a robust and transparent communication process with Design Teams during the entire development of each project, including but not limited to design, production, fabrication, transportation and installation. I create work that is in dialogue with each proposed site, working with the design team, architects, planners, and engineers.
