Color Wash I, acrylic on canvas, 2016, 36″ x 36″ (sold)
Aquious works with the integrity of informed options. The yellow signifies light, hope and belief in our future. The work examines two key elements—the physicality of viscosity and narratives forms of abstraction. These works reflect a new direction that seeks to engage and interpret the application of paint and its intentionality in a more fluid way. By interpreting the physicality of the viscosities of paint, I interpret the resistance and flow of dialogue—in both an internal and an external way. For example, while there is a similarity in execution in painting both tyvek and canvas, the fluidity looks very different—canvas is porous versus the vapor barrier of Tyvek, which resists liquid and pigment. For me, this resistance represents a challenge to connect. The paintings—on Tyvek and canvas—reflect a contemporary approach to abstraction and viscosities of paint as a narrative. In an intentional direction; one without visible text, I am utilizing an intense interrogation of viscosity to facilitate color and shape as a way of interpreting as opposed to text and direct mark-making. For me, abstract color field/washes are fluid—not about my personal emotive state but about the visceral narratives found in dialogue and chance movement—light and dark, dissent and discussion, struggle and resilience.
